So, this is just a rough abstract. Because the submit due date is at the end of this month (December 30th), I still have a plenty of time to contemplate and sharpen my writing a little bit. Honestly I don't have high hopes for this mini-project to go to proceeding. I still need a lot of time to read many related-books, but let say that this is just an abstract pep-talk. It doesn't even have a title yet, and the length of words have to be at least 500 words
Hopes this is a worthwhile.
With the concept of Mood and Modality introduced by Halliday in 1994, quite numerous researches drawn specifically on the subject matter have been developing over time. The nature of Mood and Modality is investigating the level of “definiteness” of interlocutors’ utterance when they construct sentences, either by making requests or formulating the responses, by taking the contexts into consideration. This is rooting back to the idea of “politeness markers” in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework formulated by Halliday nine years prior, who argued that it consisted of finite modal verbs, modal adjuncts, comment adjuncts, yes/no tags, and incongruent realizations of the interrogative form, in which was then developed under the “modalisation” and “modulation” analysis in Mood and Modality. Nonetheless, it does not only encompass the interlocutors’ utterance analysis in interlanguage setting, but also widespread to other types of languages such as vernacular languages. With its peculiarity and distinction, lexicogrammar analysis of vernacular language could help contribute the understanding of the language itself, as well as help preserve the resource of the language. Tolaki language is one of the native languages residing in Sulawesi Tenggara (Southeast Sulawesi), which to this day is still fully functioned by its’ local inhabitants. It is particularly used as a medium of spoken communication aimed mainly to state the intimacy and respect, to converse locally, or to relate to local custom regulation, customary celebration, and traditional wedding. Thus, by applying the concept, the researcher expects to conduct a thorough investigation of politeness markers in requests, orders, and apology in Tolaki language.Word count : 255
